Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, although it was not signed until the following year. It originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, ending in Los Angeles, with a total length of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).
Route 66 underwent many improvements and route changes, many of which significantly affected the length of the highway. One of these was the relocation of the end of the route from Los Angeles to Santa Monica.
Route 66 was the main route for migrants heading west, especially during the dust storms of the 1930s, and it supported the economy of the areas the road passed through. The people who prospered during the road's growing popularity were the same people who years later fought to keep it alive when the new U.S. Interstate Highway network began to be built.
